I announced to a few friends that he was going to do my surgery and 3 of them said he did their total hip replacements and they couldn’t be happier. He has an RN on staff who takes you through every step and answers any question you have prior to your surgery. And, following surgery, she’s there in person to talk about what’s going to happen as you recover. (She told me about the burning sensations one might experience as the thigh nerves wake up, and how to handle them. Two women I know each had hip surgery a week after me – not by Dr. Yacoubian – and were shocked that I’d been told how to deal with this weird pain, cuz no one had told them.) The home PT service was excellent, as was the outside PT. I recovered quickly. 4 weeks after surgery, I walked without a cane. I highly recommend Dr. Shahan Yacoubian.

In the 6 week-post surgery, the improvement in my quality of life has been nothing short of transformative. Before surgery, I experienced constant pain when walking or hiking even short distances. Three weeks after surgery, I was walking 5 miles daily without any assistive devices. I’m so excited to be able to do the activities I had to forgo due to hip pain. A week prior to surgery, I attended a zoom meeting given by Providence St. Joseph Hospital in which they explained what to expect and how to prepare for the procedure. Physical therapy began the day of the surgery with standing, walking the hallways to gentle exercises in order to regain my mobility. I continue doing physical therapy to improve my range of motion. ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2 Minimally Invasive Hip Surgeries I went to Dr Yacoubian a couple years ago. I was diagnosed with mild hip dysplasia and did physical therapy for a while, learning techniques to strengthen the muscles around the hip joint. Fast forward to this year when I returned to Dr. Yacoubian because the pain had intensified even more over the years. Walking more than a mile was extremely painful and I’d be sore for three days after. From just a mile! Both hips hurt. My lifestyle had slowly become more and more sedentary as I avoided movement so I could avoid the pain. Some updated X-rays and MRIs (so super fun) and it showed my condition had gotten worse. I had bone spurs as well as labral tears. I ended up having two hip surgeries, “arthroscopic hip chondroplasty debridement”. Nine months later and I feel like a new person. This was truly a life changing set of surgeries. The only limit on how far I can walk is how long I can keep going! No pain at all! Also, I have two tiny scars on each hip about the size of a nickel. It’s crazy they were able to go in there and fix things via these two tiny holes! Mind. Blown. I diligently did physical therapy after each surgery and continued my exercises. I also did a decent amount of swimming which was really great movement. Gradually my recovery has gotten better and better. Truly it was a life changing experience for me. Thanks Dr. Yacoubian! Sidenote. The office has its own X-ray room and tech so you can literally pop down the hallway, get an X-ray, and then have Dr. Yacoubian review it immediately with you.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ 2 Hip Replacements This is my second hip replacement surgery. The first was six years earlier on my left hip. Cause: osteoarthritis. I am now two weeks out of posterior approach full replacement right hip surgery. I was discharged from the hospital after about 52 hours and happy to be heading home. I used Percocet twice at home and then Extra Strength Tylenol about four to six nights to relieve annoying pain in my “groin” area and to allow me to sleep. I take aspirin daily for thinning my blood to avoid blood clots and will do so for 30 days post surgery. I used home therapy five times through today and followed instructions carefully in two to three sessions of the exercises per day on my own. I increased my daily walking steadily to the point of yesterday walking (carrying but not utilizing my cane) 1.3 miles (about 14 long residential blocks). I am working on regaining strength and range of motion, but am currently pain free. The surgery and rehab has been successful and I expect to be back playing badminton within another eight weeks. I will start outpatient physical therapy next week. Dr. Shahan Yacoubian is awesome.

I had been walking around with pain in my upper leg with every step I made for 8 months. My GP sent me for an ultra sound and everything was decidedly fine. Well it wasn’t fine because with every step the pain got worse and worse. I went on the internet and tried to self diagnose this condition. I came up with a torn ligament or a pinched nerve. A torn ligament would supposedly heal in time. It didn’t so I decided I had a pinched nerve. I am not one to live in any type of discomfort so I started asking family and friends. My father in law said I might want to see an orthopedic doctor. I asked a good friend if she knew any in Burbank. As it turned out her aunt had an amazingly great experience just recently with Dr. Shahan Yacoubian. I remember my first appointment and explaining to Dr. Yacoubian that I think I have a pinched nerve. He gave a reassuring smile and said we will see. I then went to the X-Ray room right there in his office. Five minutes later he returned to me and showed me the X-Rays that showed very clearly that all the cartilage in my right hip joint was GONE. He said no wonder I have been in pain my bone is scraping on bone with every step. He gently advised me of my options. I immediately took his first suggestion and made an appointment for a cortisone shot. Well – that didn’t work at all. So I went back to see Dr. Y and said I’m ready to be out of pain as soon as possible and we scheduled my hip replacement. Just before my scheduled operation date I struck up a conversation with a colleague who just so happen to have had a hip replacement a year prior. Needless to say we made lunch plans and talked and talked. Anna loved her experience and her surgeon. None other than the fabulous Dr. Shahan Yacoubian was her surgeon. She gave me details of the whole experience that I would have never been able to anticipate. Revision Knee Replacement Surgery

Dr. Yacoubian did a revision of my left knee replacement.
My first knee replacement was with another doctor in January 2016. Dr. Yacoubian performed the revision surgery in Oct 2017, and I couldn’t be happier. I’m now able to bend my knee to 95 degrees, where previously I couldn’t bend it past 60 degrees. Dr. Yacoubian has always been straightforward with me in answering all my questions. He has been extremely helpful, and I’m eternally grateful for all of the patience he has had with me.

Fracture Repair Surgery

I had my Quad tendons reattached to my kneecap in February by Dr Shahan Yacoubian after a freak accident. He spent time with me outlining the surgery itself and the healing process and then discussed the Physical Therapy that would follow. His staff was friendly and helpful and the procedure went exactly as predicted. My follow up visits were informative and they are truly interested in my recovery progress.
